Are You in Need of a Repair?

Service Shot

You’ve come to the right place for roofing, siding and gutter repair.

While many South Hills Pittsburgh roofing companies simply do not perform repairs, The Big Fish Contracting Company specializes in the installation and repair of asphalt shingle roofing, gutters, and vinyl siding.

Whether you’ve spotted lifted or missing shingles, improperly draining gutters, or damage to your siding, we can help.

Our service technicians are highly qualified, each having over 10+ years of on-the-roof experience. This is important because it’s not always easy to determine what’s causing a leak or how to properly solve an exterior problem but The Big Fish is proud to hire, train, and equip the best of the best to serve you!

How Do Service Calls Work?

  • 1. Appointment: Call us to schedule a service appointment. We’ll ask for a few details so we can be prepared to solve your problems efficiently.
  • 2. Assessment: Our skilled Service Technician will arrive and assess the situation. Everything is documented with digital photos for your peace of mind.
  • 3. Solution: If it’s a typical repair and the work can be completed within 2 hours or less, they’ll begin right away, on the spot.

If the necessary work will take more than 2 hours to complete, we’ll provide you with a quote and a clear explanation of the situation.

Still Have Questions?

How much do repairs cost?

The minimum charge for a service call is $250 for the first hour, plus any necessary materials. After that, it’s $100/ hour, plus materials, of course. (Read the next question to see how we handle larger repairs.)

Will your guys piddle around to soak up more hours?

That’s a fair concern. Not that our guys (or gals) would ever do that, but we’ve structured our service call pricing to eliminate the risk of inflated hours. Our process ensures the most accurate and efficient repair possible. That means, during the assessment, if we determine that your repair work is going to be more involved and will take us more than 2 hours, we’ll provide you with an estimate for the repair. Then, we’ll take it from there.

Do I need to be there at the time of the repair?

You do not need to be on site for the repair to take place, though we ask for you to be available by phone that day. This is because we’ll likely want to run our findings by you before we begin the work. Or, if your property is far too damaged to provide a repair of integrity, we’ll need to discuss how to move forward or possible replacement.

What if it can’t be repaired? How do you determine that?

We are very transparent and straightforward when it comes to providing you with information to make the best decision. So, for example, if we can reasonably perform a repair to get a few more years of life out of your roof, we won’t try to “talk you into” replacing it.

We’ll give you that honest answer and let you decide if you’d rather replace it now or opt for a repair to get a few more years of life out of it.

Occasionally, the roof, siding, or gutters might be in too poor shape to repair. If that’s the case, we’ll clearly explain our recommendation and show you pictures to detail our findings. As a general rule, most property can be repaired.

We say no to any repair that can compromise the structural integrity of a building, anyone’s safety, or if it’s likely perform poorly.

Protect Your Most Valued Asset With a Properly Maintained Roof

Properly maintain your home and chances are that you will be able to sell it for more than you bought if for. A sturdy new roof is not only more energy efficient while protecting your home from the weather, it also boosts your homes curb appeal and resale value. A roof in poor condition can result in unnecessary and costly home repairs that could have been avoided with a properly maintained sound roofing system.

7 Warning Signs That Show Your Roof May Be In Need of Repairs

Don’t get caught with sudden, costly repairs. Keep a close eye on your roof and learn how to spot problems before they severely impact your wallet with these 7 danger signs. Then call Big Fish Contracting to find out what it will take to fix all roofing problems for a worry-free life.

1. A leak in the attic.

Old Roof Danger Sign - Damp Roof Boards After a strong storm or wind-driven rain, take a look in the attic for signs of leaking. Ice damming can also cause water to enter the house if you don’t have an adequate shingle underlayment or if the flashing (the aluminum or steel used over roof joints, like chimneys and pipes) has deteriorated.

2. Blistering or peeling interior or exterior paint.

Old-Roof-Danger-Pealing PaintOld Roof Danger Sign - Pealing Paint When paint starts to peel off, the cause is likely trapped moisture in the house due to excessive temperature or high humidity from poor attic ventilation. The air in the attic needs to flow freely from the soffit to the ridge to reduce humidity. Make sure there is a vent in areas such as the kitchen or bathroom. Dryers should vent outside.

3. Stains on interior ceilings and walls; mold or mildew growth.

Old-Roof-Danger-Ceiling StainsOld Roof Danger Sign - mold or mildew growth If you see stains or, even worse, mold growth inside your home, it may be caused by inadequate or faulty shingle underlayment that is allowing water to seep into the house. Inadequate ventilation could also be the culprit, which causes excessive moisture— conditions in which mold and mildew thrive.

4. Exterior decay, sheathing, and/or siding.

Old Roof Danger Sign - Exterior decay Poor attic ventilation is again a possible cause, but any condition that results in excess moisture can contribute to decay. One way to combat the problem is to put a vapor barrier between the insulation and the inside of the house, which can reduce the amount of moisture that goes into a wall and help the moisture escape from the wall.

5. Missing, cracked, or curled shingles.

Old Roof Danger Sign - curled and damaged shingles If you see that your shingles are dry or practically break when touched, that means they have reached the end of their useful life and it’s time to invest in a new roof. Note: Ignoring this warning sign could result in additional damage to roof decking boards & Joists, attic insulation, and interior room ceiling and wall plaster or dry-wall boards, costing much more for a full repair. Call Big Fish Contracting to eliminate your risk from failing roofing systems.

6. Dark, “dirty-looking” areas on your roof.

Old Roof Danger Sign - mold stained shingles This could mean your roof has vegetation, fungus, mold, or algae growth, or that the shingles’ protective granules have been lost. This doesn’t mean you need to replace your roof, but these stains can reduce curb appeal. Cleaning the shingles is an option, but that could shorten their life. Fortunately, StainGuard® protection is available on many GAF Shingles, including Timberline® Cool Series Shingles, Timberline® Natural Shadow® Shingles, and Timberline® ArmorShield™ II Shingles.

7. Excessive energy costs.

Old-Roof-Danger-Sign-Wasted EnergyOld Roof Danger Sign - Excessive energy costs A possible cause of higher cooling costs could be insufficient attic ventilation, requiring the cooling system to run excessively. In warm weather, inadequate ventilation will trap hot air in the attic, causing air-conditioning systems to work harder, or leaving your home’s interior hotter and less comfortable. In both hot and cold weather, moisture in the attic can become trapped and condense on the rafters if it’s not insulated properly. This moisture can drip down onto the insulation and reduce its effectiveness, potentially increasing energy costs.
